Christa Maxant, LMHC

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Before opening a private practice, I worked in outpatient mental health, offering home visits, school-based therapy and office visits. In this capacity I was a 2010 and 2011 Award of Distinction Nominee at South Bay Mental Health Center in Lowell, MA.

Before I became a therapist, I worked in biotechnology and focused on the safety of medical devices. Although interesting, it lacked the human element that I was looking for in a career. Taking the advice of friends and family, I pursued a graduate degree in mental health counseling and found a career I am passionate about.  My knowledge of medicine and science allows me to work with clients to achieve health of the mind and of the body.

I opened my private practice 2013. After graduating from high school, I went to Barnard College, Columbia University in NYC and lived in the city for 8 years. I found myself drawn back to country life and moved to the area in 2002. In 2005, I attended UMass Boston and completed a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling. I also have  a graduate certification in Forensic Criminology from UMass Lowell.

I specialize in the following:

  • Child and adolescent therapy
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-partum issues
  • Grief/loss/bereavement
  • Sex and sexuality
  • Change of life issues

Finding a therapist is as much about the "right match" as it is about the skill and experience of the therapist. I welcome phone calls and emails before making an appointment to see if I fit your needs.  In therapy, some of our most difficult thoughts and feelings need a supportive place to be heard. I will ensure that our work will be safe and respectful to your needs.

I love working with both adolescents (age 12 and over) and adults. My style is down-to-earth and grounded. I will help you to move through stressful life challenges, safely resolve conflicts and relieve emotional pain. I have been working in the field of psychology for 30 years and specialize in the following:

• Trauma and traumatic life events

• Depression

• Anxiety

• Teen issues / conduct disorders

• Transitional life issues

• Grief and loss

• Substance use disorders / substance abuse / chronic relapse

• Men’s issues

I am honored to have received an award for Excellence in Best Practice from ABH (Association for Behavioral Health) as well as a citation in recognition of support, professionalism and dedication to the Ayer District Drug Court Program,10th Anniversary from The Commonwealth of Massachusetts House of Representatives.
